Abstract
One of the most debated aspects of the nature of the proper name is whether it has meaning or not. This research addresses this discussion. It is propelled by the assumption that in certain contexts, proper names -more than its referential character- can adopt a predicative function. To explain it we use as an example the onomastic literary narratives and develop connotative meanings that the name can evoke through semantic associations that emerge from referent or from significance of signs used like a proper name. If the writer continually uses these associations to deliver a meaning, then it is possible to ratify the semantic possibility of proper name. However, this meaning cannot be expressed as features or lexical-semantic properties, like in the common names, because they depend on the linguistic properties of the name. Therefore the use of the word in a specific context is a specific meaning of this word.

Keywords: Proper name, meaning, literature, character, anthrophonymy.
ER -
